How To Make A Power Green Smoothie

Smoothies are a great way to get the essential amount of vitamins and minerals into your diet each day, and including dark leafy green vegetables is always a great way to start.

The ingredients included in my Power Green Smoothie offer many unique health benefits:

Celery is known to be an excellent source of antioxidants, vitamins and minerals. Celery has anti-inflammatory properties, which are beneficial in treating many issues, including those related to your cardiovascular and digestive tract health. Studies indicate that butylphthalide, a compound found in celery may be useful for the treatment of hypertension.

Arugula is a good source of vitamin K, is rich in vitamin C and potassium, and it contains sulforaphane, a chemical believed to have potent anticancer properties, and may protect the heart from vascular inflammation and atherosclerosis. It also contains more nitrates (the good kind) than beets, which means that it does an excellent job helping to naturally control blood pressure and certain male related issues as well.

MCT (medium chain triglyceride) oil, found in foods such as coconut oil, is a very healthy fat. MCT oil helps boost metabolism, energy and weight loss, and also helps to improve stamina and maintain strong muscles. This medium chain triglyceride has also been shown to regulate blood sugar levels, and aid with inflammatory bowel diseases, as well as cognitive disorders, such as Alzheimer’s disease. Here’s where you can check it out: MCT Oil Liquid, Medium Chain Triglycerides, 32 oz, NOW Foods

The protein powder I used is from BioTrust. This protein supplement is specially formulated to produce a time-released effect. It’s a 100% all-natural product, and has no added hormones, artificial colors, sweeteners or flavors, and contains a special enzyme that can double the absorption of protein. You can click here for more information about this product: BioTrust Low Carb Protein Powder.

BCAAs are branched-chain amino acids, which include leucine, isoleucine, and valine. BCAAs are critical to your muscle health by repairing muscle tissue, building them up and keeping them strong. These amino acids also give you the quick energy needed during physical activity, and have also been shown to be effective in burning more fat, resulting in weight loss and a leaner body. Just in case you missed it, here is the recipe…

Power Green Smoothie

(Serves 1)

12 oz filtered water

50g protein powder (zero carb)

5g BCAA powder

1 teaspoon MCT Oil

2 dashes of cinnamon

2 stalks of celery

1 cup arugula

2 cups ice

Directions: Wash celery, trim ends. Combine all ingredients, blend ~30 seconds. Enjoy!

Nutrition Data (per serving):

Calories 179     Total Fat 3g     Sodium 275 mg     Carbs 15g     Protein 30g

Now before you get too bent out of shape about the carb count, let’s analyze things a bit. Almost all the carbs are coming from the arugula and the celery, which are also very high in fiber. In fact, since fiber effectively cancels out he insulin spiking effect of carbs by slowing down their digestion, the effective carb count on this smoothie is actually only 8g of carbs! Well within the bounds of decency.  :)

People have been asking about the blender I mentioned in the video, so here it is!
